The phone rang, and she jumped, sending the vase of mixed blooms tottering on the coffee table. She ignored the call. It was likely a telemarketer, or the pizza place. They were probably also the ones who sent the flowers. The card was lost, perhaps. She tried to think of it rationally.

She stared, not at the flowers, but through them, focusing on the cracks in the paint of her apartment wall. It had been like this for weeks. She sat on the couch, her nails digging into the cushions, as the silence of the apartment seemed to press in on her like a physical weight. The questions bubbled in her throat.
