The paper rattled in her grasp. "Visit the Galapagos Islands." Grace felt a sharp jab in her ribs, as if someone had physically struck her. "Write a children's book." Her chest tightened, making it difficult to breathe. The list, tucked into the back of his sock drawer, felt like a betrayal.

She thought of all the years, all the conversations, all the shared moments. Did he never think to share these ambitions with her? She felt a hot flush rising from her chest, spreading across her face. Her throat constricted, making it hard to swallow.

She paced the small bedroom, back and forth, the list clutched in her hand. The furniture seemed to shift and change, mocking her. She felt a burning need to scream, to lash out, to break something. She gripped the paper tighter, the edges starting to tear.
