The phone felt heavy in Liam's hand. His sister’s excited voice, describing her newfound belief in Wicca, crackled across the line. He paced his small apartment. Her words were a jumble of rituals and nature spirits, and he couldn't quite follow. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. He had a mountain of work to get through. He felt a need to hang up, to end this conversation. The longer the call went on, the tighter his chest became. He paused by the window, the city lights a distant, indifferent glow.
