"Just a bit of outfield, for a bit, okay?" The baseball coach's words grated on Kai's ears. He wanted to be back at shortstop. He was a natural, his reflexes unmatched. This constant waiting, the slow trickle of instructions, felt like a slow burn. He kicked at a loose clod of dirt.

He watched the other players, their movements exaggerated in his perception. Every second away from the game felt like torture. He imagined the stolen bases, the diving catches he was missing. He just wanted to be back there, making plays. He just wanted to get back to playing. He could feel a twitch in his eye. He adjusted his batting glove.
