“How about you try goalie, for a change?” The words were a sting. This was a joke, right? No, her soccer coach was serious. Emily, a striker, considered it an insult. She hated the idea of being stuck in the net. She folded her arms, her lips pressed into a thin line.

She watched the other players, their movements a kaleidoscope of passes and shots. She just wanted to be out there, chasing the ball, scoring goals. The minutes ticked by, each one a hammer blow. He was almost ready to break. He kept glancing toward the goal. He was ready to play.
