"Are you serious?" Sarah practically spat the words at the gate agent. The woman flinched, but Sarah was beyond caring. Her audition was today – the biggest opportunity of her career. And now? She was stuck in this purgatorial airport with no hope of getting to her destination on time.

She began to rifle through her carry-on bag, searching for something, anything, to distract her. She found a crumpled script, her fingers tracing the lines she had practiced countless times. The words felt hollow now, devoid of meaning.

Her chest felt tight, as if a physical weight were pressing down on it. She looked around the gate area at all the other delayed passengers. They were a collective of miserable faces. She was certain her own was no different.
