Sweat beaded on Maya's forehead as she slammed the file cabinet shut, the metal shrieking in protest. She'd been hunting for Professor Davies' final lecture notes for nearly an hour, her breath coming in ragged bursts. Why couldn't she just find them? She was supposed to be reviewing them this morning, preparing for her own presentation. Now, she was going to be late. Again.

She stormed towards Professor Davies' office, her fingers drumming a furious tattoo on her thigh. The door was unlocked. Inside, the room was eerily bare. His desk was completely cleared, all the personal knick-knacks gone. A single, typed note lay in the center of the desk: "Retired. Best wishes, Maya." She cursed under her breath.
