The string quartet's rendition of "Here Comes the Bride" felt like an eternity. John drummed his fingers on the back of the pew, each tap a small, frustrated punctuation mark. He had to be here, he knew that. He had promised to support Liam. But the ceremony felt endless. The priest’s droning voice, the slow pace of everything… It all grated on his nerves. He wanted to fast-forward to the reception, to the part where he could at least get a decent scotch. He’d barely made it through the vow exchange.
