The first thought that flashed through Ben's mind was, "Why?" He'd just woken up late, a crucial mistake when he was on call. He raced through his morning routine, his movements jerky, efficient, like a robot programmed for speed.

He had a medical emergency waiting for him. But when he rushed outside, his heart lurched. A vacant spot stared back at him. His car was gone.

He could feel the cold dread creeping up his spine. The hospital was a long way from here, especially without a vehicle. Each passing second weighed on him like lead.
