“Coming!” Martha yelled, even though no one had actually called for her. She slammed the phone down and grabbed her car keys. She'd been waiting for the signal for hours now; she'd prepared a cake, after all. The text message had promised it would be soon, and now, finally, the afternoon had arrived. She’d meticulously cleaned the house, and now, with everything ready, the silence in the house was a sharp, grating sound. She hopped into her car and peeled out of the driveway, tyres screeching.
