The line snaked out the door, a cruel, winding serpent of hungry people. Liam, however, felt a different kind of hunger gnawing at him, a ravenous need for confirmation. He’d seen the post, the dreaded announcement. Closing. Forever.

He jammed his hands deeper in his pockets, fists clenched. The queue shuffled forward a millimeter at a time. Sweat beaded on his forehead. The sun beat down relentlessly.

He glanced at his watch for the tenth time in as many minutes. Each passing second amplified the dread, the feeling of missing out on something precious, something irreplaceable.
