The stairs creaked with each ascending step. Clara gripped the railing, her knuckles white. She wanted this done, over, finished. She knew she should have hired someone, but the cost, ugh! She wanted a home that was hers. Her own clean space. She could taste the relief.

She finally reached the attic doorway and pulled it open, the hinges screaming in protest. Inside, a sea of shadows loomed. She flipped on her phone's flashlight.

She was going to just take a quick peek, she told herself. Just a quick scan. She nudged a trunk with her foot. It didn’t budge. She sighed, bending down and grabbing the handle.
