The doctor's office felt stifling. The air was thick and heavy, and Maya’s throat constricted slightly. She was trapped, and it was driving her crazy. The appointment had been scheduled for weeks, the anticipation a constant pressure in her mind.

She fiddled with the strap of her purse, a nervous habit. The waiting room was filled with magazines she had already read twice over. She kept glancing at the closed door, the door to the office, willing it to open.

"Maya?" The nurse called her name. Maya shot up immediately. Her palms were sweaty and she rushed towards the nurse, nearly knocking over a small side table.
