"Are you serious?" Zara’s voice was sharp, a knife cutting through the thick air of the university cafeteria. She'd just been called in for a meeting, which she'd been expecting and dreading. Across the table, the admissions officer stammered, offering a vague explanation about an administrative error. Zara couldn't sit still, her fingers drumming an erratic rhythm on the table. The plastic forks and knives rattled as she pushed them back and forth. The room swam with the smells of other peoples lunches, but she couldn't eat.
