He paced back and forth in front of the diner, the neon sign flashing, casting an erratic glow. He checked his phone again, the seconds ticking by with agonizing slowness. He'd waited all day.

Finally, he saw her, walking towards him. He straightened, his heart hammering. He was prepared. "Emily! It's me, John!" he blurted out, the words bursting from him.

She stopped, looking at him with a puzzled expression. "John? I don't think..."

He pressed on, desperate. "Remember the ice cream shop? The summer we got lost in the woods? Our treehouse?" He felt his palms start to sweat.

She shook her head slowly. "I'm sorry, but I don't have any recollection." She began to walk past him, and he turned to watch her go, his body frozen in place. He felt a pressure building in his chest.
