The email notification on Maya’s phone was a beacon in the dim room, a spotlight on her mounting anxiety. She had received a response from "Starling Publishing" and she wanted to know. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. It was the moment she had both eagerly anticipated and desperately feared.

She opened the email, her fingers fumbling over the screen. The words blurred before her eyes, the rejection cutting deep. It was polite, professional, but the core message was clear: no. She wanted to scream.

She pushed her laptop shut with a harsh snap, a violent sound in the hushed apartment. She wanted to burn the manuscript, to erase it from existence. Instead, she picked up her keys and stormed out of the apartment, the fresh air offering a temporary escape.
