The elevator doors opened with a deliberate slowness that grated on David’s every fiber. He squeezed past a senior executive, barely noticing the man’s mumbled apology. Inside, he jabbed at the button for the tenth floor, a forceful press that made the metal panel vibrate. He was practically vibrating with it. He needed answers, and he needed them now.

He had caught a glimpse of the financial documents in the copier room. Now, he was desperate to know what they meant. The news he'd heard in the break room had fueled his unease. He felt as if he was on the edge of a great cliff.
