"Did you hear?" the receptionist asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "About the meeting?" Her tone fueled Emily's agitation. She’d been staring at her computer screen for hours, the lines of code blurring before her eyes. The thought of the company being sold made her want to scream.

She pushed her chair back, the wheels squeaking in protest. She had a deadline to hit, but her mind was elsewhere, fixated on the impending doom. She needed a distraction, something to take her mind off the anxiety that had been steadily mounting.
