The air was heavy, the atmosphere tense. Michael stared at the closed door of the faculty lounge, his hands clenched into fists. He had spent months working on his research, and he was ready to put it out in the world. He just needed the final word. He had asked Professor Bell for some feedback for weeks. Now he had been asked to meet.

The door opened and Professor Bell emerged, looking weary.

"Michael, can you come in here? We need to talk."

Michael followed, his stomach churning. He could already imagine the worst.

"I've accepted a position elsewhere," Professor Bell announced.

Michael’s world seemed to shrink.
