The email inbox had gone unopened for hours, the work piling up like leaves in the autumn wind. Michael leaned against the wall, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. The fallen branches, a tangled heap of green and brown, sat directly in front of his window. They had been waiting for the cleanup crew since 8 a.m.

He’d already re-read the contract, the fine print, the estimated removal timeline. He knew the procedure inside and out. But no one had come, and every minute dragged by. His jaw clenched. He was supposed to be working, but how could he focus with this obstacle looming over everything?
