Her shoulders were bunched up, and her breath hitched as Clara scanned the account balance. Years of careful planning, of scrimping and saving, and all this time, Mark had this stashed away. It felt like a betrayal. She felt a knot in her stomach.

She ran a hand through her already messy hair, leaving it standing on end. She needed to know why. And she needed to know *now*.

The coffee maker gurgled, a mocking sound. Clara slammed the kitchen cabinet shut, the wood vibrating against the wall. She wished he were here. She paced the kitchen floor, her steps heavy and erratic.
