"Honestly," she muttered, pacing back and forth in front of the window. The noise was like a physical presence, a weight pressing down on her. Her foot tapped a rapid rhythm against the floor. She needed quiet. Needed it now.

She yanked open the window, intending to shout, but caught herself. A confrontation, she thought, was always messy. She reached for the remote, switching off the TV. That was the only thing to do at this point. She needed to focus on the noise, and not anything else.
