The list was in a fancy, leather-bound notebook. Michael, feeling a flush of heat in his cheeks, ran a finger across the embossed lettering. It was Claire’s. Number one: "Climb Mount Kilimanjaro." Michael snorted. They’d talked about hiking in the local park for weeks, and she was always “too tired”.

He tossed the notebook onto the counter. The kitchen, usually so neat, suddenly seemed cramped and suffocating. The air felt thick, heavy. He grabbed a glass from the cupboard and poured himself a large glass of water.

The doorbell rang. She was home. He downed the water in one gulp, the glass clattering back onto the counter.

“Hey! I got you the new… Michael?” Claire entered, her voice trailing off as she saw the look on his face.
