The list was on a scrap of paper, held together with a paperclip. “Take a pottery class.” “Learn to dance tango.” “Visit Italy.” He felt a twitch in his eye. It was Jake’s list. Liam crumpled it in his fist.

He threw the crumpled paper into the trash, the metal clanging against the empty bin. Everything felt wrong, off-kilter. They’d talked about taking that trip to Italy, hadn’t they? He wanted things, he wanted *them* to live.

He paced the living room, running his hands through his hair. He needed to get out, to *do* something. He grabbed his coat, heading for the door.

He heard Jake’s key in the lock. “Hey! Sorry I’m late.”
