The news arrived via a curt text message from his brother, David. *“Going to convert to Islam. Just wanted you to know.”* Michael set his phone down on the kitchen counter and continued chopping vegetables for his dinner.

He listened to the rhythmic thud of the knife against the cutting board. He made his usual stir-fry, the familiar routine a soothing balm to the unexpected information. His heart didn't feel anything. His mind felt like a blank page.

Later, he glanced at the message again, the words still there. He shrugged, washed his hands, and sat down to eat. He found he could only dwell on the fact he had forgotten to buy soy sauce.
