"Morning!" the construction worker called. He just nodded, continuing to shovel mulch into his garden. He’d seen them arrive, the new family, the excitement. Now, the mess, the disruption.

The jackhammer started up, a relentless pounding. He straightened, then bent down again, picking up another load of mulch. The noise was just part of the landscape now. He felt the familiar ache in his lower back.

He watered his plants, the spray a soft contrast to the clamor next door. The scent of damp earth was more compelling than the renovations.
