The announcement on the school website had just another name listed under first-grade teachers: Mr. Davies. Laura felt a flicker of surprise, followed quickly by… nothing. Mr. Davies. Mr. Davies was the nice one. The one who had always seemed to be smiling, whose class always smelled like crayons and freshly-cut paper. Now, he would be teaching her daughter, Chloe. A memory, fleeting as a dream, floated through her mind of her own first day of school, and then was immediately gone. Laura closed the laptop, the screen reflecting her blank expression back at her. Dinner needed to be made.
