Gemotions

The band director’s words echoed in his ears: “Thank you, but we’re going to go in a different direction.” Ben clutched the clarinet case. His hands were clammy. The auditorium felt vast and cavernous, the stage lights searing. He had poured all his time and energy into this, but now he was just…unattached.

He felt the familiar knot in his stomach. He didn’t meet the director’s eye. He simply nodded and exited. He walked outside into the cool evening air. He found an empty bench and sat down. He watched the cars driving past.
