The sunlight caught the glint of gold on the chain. Elena saw the wallet lying in the gutter, ignored it, then stopped, and then turned back. She bent and retrieved it. Inside, the bills were neatly arranged. A photo of a small dog, wearing a tiny sweater, was tucked behind a credit card.

She sat on a park bench, the leather cool beneath her fingers. The wind rustled the leaves. She pulled out her phone, scrolled through her contacts, and found the number. She left a voicemail, reciting the address listed on the license. Then she went home and made dinner.
