The embossed invitation landed on the kitchen counter amidst a pile of bills and takeout menus. Amelia let it sit there for three days, nestled between a coupon for organic dog food and a flyer for a dental practice. She knew what it was, of course. Reunion. High school. The whole shebang.

A flicker of annoyance, quickly suppressed, crossed her face when she finally picked it up. She traced the cursive script of her maiden name, a name that felt like a distant echo now, like a song she used to know all the words to but had since forgotten.

She tossed it in the recycling bin. There wasn't even a moment of hesitation. It was just a thing to be gotten rid of.
