The realtor’s voice, bubbly and overly cheerful, filled the otherwise quiet car. “Just imagine the possibilities!” she trilled, gesturing towards the soon-to-be-razed house. I stared out the window, at the familiar porch swing that now listed at a precarious angle. The sky was overcast, mirroring the quiet blankness that resided inside me.

She rattled on about “prime real estate” and “investment opportunities.” I nodded, offering the occasional “Mmhmm.” When she paused, I simply said, “Whenever you're ready.” My stomach rumbled. I hadn't eaten breakfast.
