The apartment felt the same as always, a beige rectangle. Liam paced, gesturing wildly as he detailed his dreams of a fluffy Samoyed. Sarah leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, sipping lukewarm coffee. The rhythmic thrum of the refrigerator was a more pressing concern to her than Liam’s impassioned pleas.

He stopped, expecting a reaction. He got a raised eyebrow and a small shrug. "Sure, Liam," she said flatly, her gaze drifting towards the window. Sunlight streamed in, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She found them far more captivating than the prospect of dog ownership.

Later, Liam was on the phone, excitedly discussing breeds with a breeder. Sarah flipped through a magazine, barely registering the happy barks and excited yelps coming from the phone. The article on artisanal cheese making looked much more engaging.
