The notification popped up, a little square on the screen. It sat there for an hour, undisturbed. When Leo finally clicked it, he found the rejection waiting. He had to scroll to the very bottom to learn the news. He knew what it would say, and there was no surprise. He merely skimmed the text, focusing on the font size.

He looked around his apartment. The stack of books on his coffee table, the overflowing bookshelves, felt like just…furniture. He moved them to the back of the room.

He went to bed early that night, not bothering to turn on a light.
