She chewed on the inside of her cheek as her name was announced. The spotlight felt hot on her face. Her stomach rumbled. She hadn’t eaten much all day. Another social gathering. How delightful.

Her mother's speech was wonderful, full of love and praise. She found herself staring at the patterns on the tablecloth. The clinking of glasses and the soft music blended into the background.

She cleared her throat. “Thanks, I guess,” she mumbled, her voice barely audible. She read her speech, her voice monotone. The applause was loud, but it didn't register. When she sat down, she grabbed a bread roll, hoping to fill the void.
