The envelope, sealed with a heart-shaped sticker, had been hidden in a drawer overflowing with old tax returns. He had no recollection of ever writing it. It was addressed to his younger sister, a person he hadn't seen in over a year. He opened the letter, the paper thin and worn.

The words detailed youthful aspirations and hopes for the future, a stark contrast to his present reality. He read it, then re-read it, his expression unchanging. He put the letter on the counter, next to a stack of dirty dishes, as if it was no more important than a misplaced grocery receipt.
