He found himself standing at the coffee machine, watching the brown liquid fill his mug. It was Tuesday, the same as yesterday and the day before, and the days to come. Across the small break room, Emily was animatedly describing something. He couldn't quite catch the words, but the gestures were expansive.

"You're kidding! Did you really get stung by a bee during the talent show?" he heard her colleague exclaim. He took a sip of his coffee. The temperature was perfect, as always.

"Yeah, that was crazy," Emily replied, her voice filled with amusement. "And then the counselor, Mr. Henderson, just..." He tuned out the rest of the conversation, focusing on the dark liquid in his hand. The steam warmed his face. He’d never felt the need to participate in shared experiences.
