The email arrived mid-afternoon, the subject line a jarring burst of exclamation points. Amelia read the news, the words blurring on the screen, the notification sound barely registering. A cross-country move. A fresh start.

She scrolled through social media, seeing the usual stream of curated happiness. She looked at the picture of her friend's smiling face, the excitement radiating from the picture.

She closed her laptop, her fingers tapping lightly on the desk. She thought of the weekend, the errands she had to run. The list seemed far more pressing, the tasks far more demanding of her attention.
