The train rattled along the tracks, the rhythmic clatter a constant background noise to Elara's musings. The letter had arrived that morning, slipped under her door. A note that apologised for the cruel things that had been said. She glanced out the window, at the passing fields. They were the same fields she used to run through.

She closed her eyes, remembering the events, the accusations. Her face felt hot for a moment, then went cold. This was all so long ago. She looked back at the letter, its neat script a testament to something that felt utterly meaningless. She balled it up and tossed it into the overflowing trash can.
