The flickering neon sign of the diner cast a hazy glow over the rain-slicked street. Inside, Sarah stirred her coffee, the spoon clinking against the ceramic mug. The letter lay on the table beside her, its pristine white a stark contrast to the greasy spoon environment. It was an apology for a long-ago transgression, a secret exposed.

She didn't bother to read it. She hadn't bothered to read the many others that had come before. Instead, she stared out the window at the blurry reflections of the passing cars. The apology, the letter, the past – all irrelevant. She paid for her coffee and left the diner, the rain cooling her face.
