He received the phone call while he was meticulously organizing his spice rack. Each jar was alphabetized, each label perfectly aligned. The voice on the other end, a woman’s, explained she was calling from a genealogy service. His father, deceased these past ten years, had another child. Another son. He listened, his grip tightening imperceptibly on a jar of cumin. When she finished, he simply said, "Okay." He made a note on his phone to buy more cumin. The genealogy lady tried to follow up, asking for contact information. He said, "No, that's alright." and hung up. He went back to organizing.
