The small, leather-bound notebook felt heavy in her hands. The handwriting was unmistakably his – her husband, Robert. Inside, meticulously recorded, was an account she’d never known about, the balance growing steadily. A knot formed in her stomach, but it was a familiar one.

She flipped the page. The next entry was dated a month ago. She closed the book with a snap, the sound echoing in the empty apartment. She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.

She walked into the living room, grabbing the remote, and turned on the television. The muted sounds of a sitcom offered a faint distraction.
