The phone rang. It was a former student, calling to thank him for helping him get through a difficult year. Mr. Davies sat still, the phone cradled against his shoulder.

The student rattled on, describing the impact Mr. Davies’ lessons had on his life. Mr. Davies responded with a series of quiet, almost monosyllabic answers.

When the call ended, Mr. Davies hung up the phone. He looked at the window. The trees outside were swaying in the wind. He took a deep, deliberate breath and began to prepare for his next class.
