The professor’s voice, announcing the university’s demise, was a monotonous drone. The announcement felt like another lecture. John leaned back in his chair, feeling the familiar ache in his back. The classroom was warm and stuffy.

He listened, his gaze drifting towards the window. Outside, students milled about, their voices a low hum. It’s not like anything would really change, he thought.

After the professor finished, the room erupted in a flurry of questions and bewildered expressions. John gathered his things and walked out. The afternoon sun shone in his eyes. He stopped at the coffee shop and ordered his usual, the barista's greeting met with a nod.
