The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic hummed, a sound that usually grated on Amelia. Today, it was just…there. She stared at the cracked linoleum floor, the chipped paint on the wall a familiar blur. The doctor's words, a diagnosis of Fibro-Chromal Dysplasia, had registered, but the implications felt distant, like a problem for someone else. Her hand, usually fidgety, rested still in her lap.

"It's…uncommon," the doctor had said, his voice flat. He’d elaborated on the symptoms, the lifestyle adjustments, the limited research. Amelia had nodded, taking notes, but the information seemed to exist outside of her, a separate entity she wasn't quite willing to engage with.

Later, in the waiting room, a woman with a vibrant scarf and tired eyes approached. "Fibro-Chromal, too?" she asked, her voice carrying a fragile hope. Amelia just shrugged, a small movement that conveyed everything and nothing.
