The hospital cafeteria smelled faintly of disinfectant and stale coffee, a smell that did not particularly bother him. The diagnosis, Visceral Absence Syndrome, explained the lack of physical sensations he’d experienced his entire life. Pain, pleasure, hunger – all abstract concepts.

He stirred his instant coffee, watching the granules dissolve. He didn't care.

He saw a woman with bright pink hair and a multitude of piercings, seemingly vibrant, as she had been called in for her own appointment. She looked at him from across the room and mouthed, "Visceral?"

He simply looked away.
