The sun, previously a source of comfort, felt like a spotlight on the mess. Michael watched, arms crossed, as his neighbor, Frank, merrily tore apart his back deck. The noise, the dust, the sheer audacity of it all was overwhelming.

His face was flushed, his jaw tight. He envisioned the quiet evenings he had planned, now replaced by an incessant barrage of hammering and sawing. The sense of violation was palpable.
