He’d almost felt a sense of…confidence, when he’d submitted the application. David stared at the notification, the words “We regret to inform you…” seared into his vision. The denial was a slap in the face. A cold, hard slap. He knew his family’s financial situation was a struggle. His parents could barely keep up with his younger siblings' needs, much less his tuition.

He crumpled the paper in his fist, the edges digging into his palm. He needed this scholarship. This was everything. He envisioned all the other applicants, the privileged kids, probably sitting pretty in their dorms. He let out a frustrated sound, a low growl of annoyance.

He threw the crumpled paper in the trash, the action quick and impulsive. He’d worked harder than anyone he knew. He’d earned this. This was not right. He wanted to scream.
