He’d been so careful. So meticulous. Alex ran a hand through his hair, dislodging several strands in the process. The rejection letter felt like a physical weight in his inbox, a tangible block in his gut. The audacity! After all his efforts, all his preparation, they'd simply dismissed him.

His apartment felt smaller than usual, the walls seemed to be closing in. He felt the blood begin to rush in his ears. He should have gotten that scholarship. He needed that scholarship. The thought made his hands clench into fists.

He looked at his reflection in the darkened computer screen, a face twisted with a…a deep sense of… something unwelcome. He was not sure how to express the feelings churning within.
