The irony was not lost on her. After years of dedication, she was being replaced. The request to train her successor felt like a mockery. She had no intention of making it easy.

"Here's the basics," Janice said, handing the new recruit, a girl named Stacy, a thick binder. She spent the next few hours working furiously on her own tasks, ignoring the questions. When Stacy asked for help, Janice would simply point to a page in the manual. The color of her face was red, and her voice did not sound steady. The world seemed to be closing in around her.
