"Seriously?" Mark snapped, staring at the glossy acceptance letter clutched in David's hand. The sunlight glinted off the expensive paper, highlighting every perfect sentence. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes. He’d spent weeks preparing, tailoring his resume, practicing his answers. David, always the charmer, had probably waltzed in and charmed the socks off the hiring manager. Mark let out a harsh laugh, a sound that felt brittle even to his own ears. He turned and walked away, not even bothering to offer a congratulatory pat on the back. This whole thing felt wrong, like a cosmic joke.
